Matlock, who were beaten by Sheffield FC on Saturday, looked comfortable throughout the first half, and spirits were lifted when Dwayne Wiley thundered in from 35 yards for his first goal for the club.

Staveley grew in confidence in the first half and had their chances, but Matlock were equal to their opponents threat and dealt with what was thrown at them comfortably.

Shots from Matlock’s Jake Green and Andy Todd were saved, and chances went begging as the they struggled to find that elusive second goal.

On 37 minutes, Staveley were rewarded for their patient build up play, when Adam Lee equalised from close range.

Matlock continued to push and on 39 minutes Todd, who was on great form, found Green with a beautifully placed 20 yard pass, only for him to control, turn and curl a shot which bounced off the cross bar.

The second half started well for Matlock and on 47 minutes Green found the net for his first goal in a Matlock shirt, after a Marc Newsham shot was parried away by the Staveley keeper. An alert Green tucked the ball away for Matlock’s second.

Staveley were once again lively and on 50 minutes responded with their second of the game courtesy of Ash Rawson.

Matlock made many changes in the second half and an outstanding contribution from Ryan King saw his efforts thwarted on several occasions as he attempted to put Matlock back in front.

The introduction of Ben Partridge for Matlock on 75 minutes almost paid off straight away as he used his strength to run through the Staveley defence, only to see his shot go wide.

On 87 minutes Partridge showed why the Matlock Town management duo have shown faith in him, as he once again tore through the Staveley defence to fire toward goal, only for the Stavely keeper to pull off a great save and send the ball out for a corner.
