Matlock Baileans 4ths 2

West Bridgford 2

The first game was always going to be tough, as many of regulars were away on holiday.

Fortunately, the team had help from Leyanne Beacham, Marie Cowie and Rae Hunt, who helped produce a fine Matlock performance. The game started with Matlock on the attack down the right. Donna Poplar and Janice Bush linked well but were unlucky not to score. The deadlock was broken when a superb reverse stick strike by Beacham saw Matlock take the lead.

But the lead was shortlived when West Bridgford were awarded a short corner. It ricocheted off the backboard, despite solid defending from keeper Claire Mosley.

The second half saw a much more attacking West Bridgford and it took solid defending from Suzanne Doxey and Anne Dodds to keep them out.

The 4ths took advantage against the run of play and took the lead from a well-struck shot from Jo Boam. In the dying minutes, however, another short corner was conceded to level the game.

This was a good solid start to the season for the 4ths with captain Cath Croney outstanding as ever in midfield, distributing the ball well.
