MATLOCK Baileans 5ths travelled to Allestree for an evenly-matched friendly against Woodlands on Saturday.

Baileans started well, working the ball up the match immediately, thanks to hard hitters like Fran Lilley.

As Woodlands fought back, there was much good marking and tackling from the defence, and midfielder Beth Willis returned the ball to the Matlock forwards several times, with Chloe Farmer holding the centre well.

Winger Janice Bush outran the Woodlands defence repeatedly, and early in the second half the pressure paid off with a goal from Julia Price after a rebound.

Moments later there was a second from Wendy Hammond, after some excellent passing up and into the circle, but Woodlands then scored twice in quick succession to equalise.

Matlock tightened things up for the remainder of the game, and were unlucky not to score again, so the final score was 2-2.

Both umpires congratulated the team for the nice hockey played. Well done to young goalie Frankie Monteith, and returners Lucy Maycock and Fran Lilley, who all gave an excellent account of themselves.
