Matlock Baileans 2
Matlock 2nds had an early start against Ashby in the Midlands Feeder League, missing some key players.
But they were provided with pace, skill and experience in the form of Vicki Hammond, Leyanne Beacham, Catherine Loeber and Jane Proctor.
The first half was goalless despite good shots at goal from Vicki Hammond and Claire Stevenson. Matlock used the wings well with some good attacking runs down both flanks from Vicki Hammond and Frankie Price.
The second half saw a lot more goal action. The first goal came when Matlock were awarded a penalty stroke. Marie Cowie stepped up and flicked the ball in the left hand corner but the shot was surprisingly disallowed due to an extra step being taken. Becky Mead stepped up to re-take and fired the ball into the bottom right hand corner to put Matlock ahead.
In the midfield, Becky Mead and Marie Cowie battled hard and gave the forwards some good scoring opportunities. Vicki Hammond then scored from open play to put Matlock ahead.
Ashby came back into the game when they scored from a penalty corner and briefly looked threatening but Matlock were able to hold things together, with Jill Beacham playing superbly as sweeper and Catherine Loeber strong at left back.
Matlock continued to push for another goal but were unable to convert a succession of penalty corners.
This was a really good team effort from Matlock, who fully deserved the three points which sees them move to third position in the League. The next league game will be on November 5 against Ashbourne at Wirksworth. Everyone is welcome to come down and support their local team.
