Matlock Baileans 2nds 3

Belper 3rds 0

A COMFORTABLE 3-0 win was secured by the second team this week against old rivals Belper.

Matlock began really strongly, scoring twice within the first seven minutes.

The first proved to be a spectacular goal from Sally Spencer that was hit into the bottom left corner and shot from the top of the D.

It came about after excellent linking play between defence and midfield had led to a well-placed pass.

The second came from a short corner.

Ruth Whittaker dragged the ball out to Rachel ‘Dibs’ Moor at the top of the D, whose resulting strike ricocheted into the goal.

For the rest of the first half, and a good chunk of the second, Matlock battled it out with plenty of accurate passing, strong tackles from Grace Day and Laura Hudson, and most of the possession.

Several breaks came from hard hits down the wings by captain Claire-Marie Stephenson, and sweeper Dibs Moor, and also from some well-timed switching between the backs.

Then there was more good linking between defenders and attackers.

Nina Smedley, Chloe Knebel and man-of-the-match Frankie Price had several good runs up to the Belper end in this way.

The third goal finally came from another short corner after several chances.

The ball came to Sally who slipped it to Dibs, and she scored to complete a very satisfactory match for Baileans 2nds and secure an important win.
