Melton Mowbray 27
Bakewell Mannerians 1sts 26
Mannerians were involved in a real nailbiter of a game at the weekend and ended up losing by a solitary point in the Midlands Two East (North).
Bakewell started strongly and took the lead when skipper Will Moroney and Will Brocklehurst set up Tom Crapper for the opening try of the afternoon on six minutes.
The lead was then stretched further by Moroney’s penalty and Al Ashton’s try, converted by Moroney.
The home side responded with a converted try of their own to make it 17-7 at the break.
Into the second half, Melton slashed the deficit with an unconverted try and a penalty, but Bakewell responded with a penalty of their own from Moroney.
Bakewell were still looking good and made it 23-15 when Moroney kicked a further penalty on the hour mark but this was the signal for Melton to mount a comeback, which culminated in an unconverted try.
Moroney again kicked a penalty but it was to be Mannerians’ final score of the afternoon as Melton scored a converted try with two minutes left to snatch it at the death and end a thrilling encounter.
