Matlock Orienteering Club is the first in the country to take on an orienteering coach apprentice and offer training to complete the UKCC-approved Level 1 Orienteering Coach Award.

Becky Hinchley coaches locally in a number of sports but, for the past three months, B has been an apprentice to Judith Holt, the Matlock Community Orienteering Club lead coach.

Judith is also qualified as a coach educator and assessor so she was able teach and assess Becky while she helped run the club night activities.

The Orienteering Club meets on Wednesdays during term time from 6.30 to 8pm. The usual meeting place is the ARC Leisure Centre in Matlock, with orienteering activities based on The Dimple or other local areas including Hall Leys Park or Farley Moor.

On June 13 and 20, the club will go to the Whitworth Centre, Darley Dale, for two sessions aimed at introducing new people to orienteering and preparing individuals and teams to enter the Derbyshire Schools and Youth Groups Orienteering Championships.

The Derbyshire Schools and Youth Group Orienteering Championships take place on Saturday, June 23, at Darley Abbey.

Arrive at 10am to register for starts between 10.30am-11.30am. Only three people from the same school or group are needed to count as a team and there are also medals for the top three on each course whether they are part of a team or not.

Full details are available from www.dvo.org.uk or email matlocko@btinternet.com.

Meanwhile, junior members of Matlock Orienteering Club had a great night on the climbing wall at Staveley.

They had to climb the wall to identify orienteering map symbols which had been strung up all over the wall.
