cavan Corcoran enjoyed a fine weekend in the latest rounds of the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain.

Racing in rounds seven, eight and nine at the Rockingham circuit, the 18-year-old from Two Dales finished second, fifth and third, the first of those results being his best of the season so far.

Going into the meeting, there was confidence in the Corcoran camp, as dad Brian explained: “It’s been a good circuit for him in the past.

“He won there in 2012 in the Formula Ford Academy Series so we were hoping for a good showing again.

“In Round Seven, he started third but was hampered by a fault with the suspension.

“He still managed to finish in second though, which was a great effort.

“We were over the moon with that because it’s his best result of the season so far.

“Last year, all the competitors he was up against were British but now he’s racing in an international set-up.

“Competitors are from four continents and nine different countries but he’s rising to the challenge.

“In Round Eight, he started second but right from the off he had trouble finding sixth gear going into the first hairpin and this saw him drop from second to seventh.

“It only happened right at the start because the gearbox was cold.

“After that, he passed one but was held up big time by the driving in front of him and finished fifth.

“In Round Nine, the old problem with the gearbox was there again right at the start but after that it was OK, once it had warmed up.

“He started second but he fought back from seventh after that initial gearbox issue. He managed to finish third and he is now third in the championship table, effectively.”

Brian continued: “Cav’s getting better and better and it was a great weekend for him.”

Next up is a return to Brand’s Hatch this weekend for the latest rounds of the competition.

Dad Brian is particularly looking forward to this, as he explained: “I have to say that last time, when he was on the podium at Brand’s Hatch a few weeks ago, and I saw the UK flag above him, it was probably the proudest moment of my life.

“He’s taking on and beating experienced drivers, and all on a shoestring too, so we’re hoping for more of the same this weekend.”
