With 800 feet of climbing from Cromford Meadows to the Bole Hill trig point and back, the five-mile Black Rocks Fell Race course attracted a field of 112 serious fell runners this year.
The clear winner, Peter Hodkinson of Erewash Valley, was already a minute clear at the Black Rocks car park, and stretched his lead to nearly three minutes by the finish, at the end of the canal, to record the very fast time of 36 minutes 9 seconds.
Still only in fourth place at the summit, Matlock policeman Karl Webster looked to be making a bid for promotion to the Flying Squad as he tore past the two other leaders down the Sheep Pasture incline to finish second in 38.57, also taking the veteran 40 spot. Shaun Cooper of Shelton Striders was third in 39.16. Anthony Roberts of the Derby Triathlon club took the veteran 50 prize in 14th place. The few Matlock AC members that the organising club could spare from marshalling duties finished high up the field, taking a couple more category prizes in the process.
The Matlock placings included Richard Bradbury (12th), Andy Whittaker (19th), Diane Lee (first lady in 30th. Simon Brister (first veteran 60 in 37th) and John Birch (43rd).
