YOUNGSTERS from Bonsall Primary School made a splash on Friday when they retained their Matlock Schools Water Polo Tournament title.

There were eight teams involved in this fourth annual competition at Matlock Lido from six local schools, namely from Bonsall, St Joseph’s School, Matlock, South Darley, Winster, Brassington and Middleton-by-Wirksworth, mainly featuring pupils from Years Five and Six.

Event organiser Becki Crofts said the event was a success and she hopes to see it transfer to the new Arc Leisure Matlock facility for any future tournaments.

She explained: “The kids love having the chance to play water polo.

“We run it as an offshoot from their regular swimming lessions and we try to get them playing it about once a term.

“They always cheer when we tell them they’re going to be playing water polo so it’s very popular with them and that’s why the tournament has gone so well over the past four years.

“It’s a sport that we try to get them interested in because it’s all about keeping them active instead of just sitting in front of the television.

“It’s a team game and it’s something that kids who like football and netball can really get into.”

The winners of the the first two tournaments were Winster and Tansley but Bonsall followed up last year’s triumph with victory on Friday to make it back-to-back successes.

Any youngsters aged 9-14 who would like to get involved in Matlock’s junior water polo team, competing in tournaments across the area, can call Becki Crofts for more details on 01629 582843.
