Two losses to local rivals South Derbyshire last week saw Matlock Water Polo Club eliminated from the remaining cup competition available and a position firmly established at the foot of the Notts League.
Wednesday’s 24-5 knock-out cup defeat at Repton saw 20 major fouls committed, 13 by the away side.
The match itself was not an ill-tempered one between the sides, but the high number of exclusions caused great unrest throughout the Matlock team.
Sunday’s home 20-4 reversal was a far more consistent affair in terms of major fouls given, notwithstanding some protests from members of the crowd.
Despite the scorelines, Matlock showed great improvement at times and, but for outstanding performances by a couple of the opposition in both games, the margin would have been much closer.
Matlock now have two weeks to prepare for their next game, hoping to secure their first win of the season and start a climb up the league.
Details in next week’s Mercury.
