Fourths back with a bang

Matlock 4ths 4

Wulfric 1

The first game of the year and the first since the beginning of December saw a rusty Matlock side take the game to Wulfric.

Within the first ten minutes, they had numerous chances to take the lead but the shots went astray.

Settling down, Wulfric had their chance of taking the lead with shots on goal just going wide.

Eventually the deadlock was broken when a fumble following a short corner saw Donna Poplar score Matlock’s first goal just before half time.

Wulfric came out fighting in the second half and a cross from the left couldn’t be defended as the opposition levelled with a shot deflecting in.

Fortunately, Matlock responded immediately when Sally Spencer scored a cracking goal from another short corner to keep the home side in the lead.

From this point, Wulfric seemed to lose their shape and Matlock took control of the game with superb midfield play from Jo Boam and Rachel Sergeant linking well with the forwards Janice Bush and Fran Perry.

Despite numerous one-on-ones with the keeper, Perry couldn’t increase the lead until a superb reverse stick sweep made it three and, with a few minutes left, Perry doubled her score with a cracking shot in the left hand corner.

Matlock had to defend well throughout the game with youngster Holly Jones and keeper Claire Mosley outstanding throughout.
