Golfers keep their cool at away event

WEATHER conditions were still hot and humid, meaning Monday was a great day out at Wortley Golf Club for the Matlock Golf Club’s captain’s first away day.

Thanks to good work and organisation from Brian Stacey and Ian Marr, 48 members enjoyed competed in 12 teams at the North Sheffield course. The winning team with 90pts was Ged Elton, Andy Turk, John Nash and Joe Marshall.

On Wednesday, the Seniors Cup was held. The winner was Brian Hardy (44pts), second was Derek Smith with 42 pts, and third was Kieron Wright with 41pts.

On Thursday, the captain’s team played Alfreton at home, securing a 6–0 win.

The ladies also played their Silver Trophy match, losing 3–2 at home, their first defeat of the season, having won their six previous matches.

However, with one more match to play before the semi-final places are decided, Matlock Silver Team is currently leading its division.

On Friday, with the weather breaking, the Ladies 4AM Open was held. 156 ladies took part, from 41 different clubs with approximately £200 being raised for the captains charity.

First prize winners were Judith Graham (Matlock), Sandra Walters (Grassmoor), Helen Elshaw (Tapton) and Cheryl Shepperson (Ormonde Fields) with 86 pts.

Other prize winners travelled from Nuneaton, Rotherham, Lindrick, Ashbourne, Prestbury and Bakewell.

Medal No5 was held on Saturday, with an excellent gross score of 66 (2) 64 by Division One winner Andrew Hession.

Other winners were Division Two’s Chris Woodhouse 81 (12) 69, Division Three’s Dave Slinn 80 (14) 66, Division Four’s Alan Turner 87 (19) 68.

Matlock Golf Club is holding an open weekend on August 6-7 for gentlemen, ladies and juniors interested in playing golf and joining the club.
