Improvement but no victory

Matlock Water Polo Club’s Monday night defeat at Bingham showed improvement but still leaves the side with no wins, four games into the season.

The eventual 11-6 scoreline was largely the result of a very poor third quarter which Matlock lost 6-1, a consequence of losing the shape and discipline of the first two sessions, giving a 3-2 lead.

Coach Richard Sellors was upbeat after the game. “The first half was exactly what we have been working towards. The third quarter we resorted to type a little. But we are close to turning this around.”

Jim Evans managed two goals with four other players scoring one apiece.

Nine major fouls were awarded against Matlock in contrast to only three from the home side.

Andy Massey’s dissent at a nearby camera and firm advice to the referee not only earned him a permanent exclusion, but could lead to the cancellation of his lucrative promotional contract with Ladyshave.

Matlock’s vociferous away support of the previous week was missing as he had lost his voice due to a bad cold.

Reigning league champions Hucknall A visit the Lido on Sunday, in what will certainly be a very tough match for Matlock. Tickets will only go on general sale on the day of the game.

Crowd segregation is expected.
