It’s all-square for the firsts

Matlock Baileans 1sts 2

Harborne 2

Matlock played their penultimate match of the season away at Harborne, coming away with a well-fought draw and were unlucky not to steal a win.

Matlock were strong from the start and their efforts were rewarded with a few deserved penalty corners from which they scored their first goal.

The ball was switched left to midfielder Laura Donaldson who took a strike to put Matlock in front.

Matlock held their lead for most of the first half and were unfortunate to concede a goal towards the end of the half, despite an awesome defensive effort from Alice Cundy, who marked Harborne’s key player out of the game, and also many brilliant saves from goalkeeper and man of the match Dani Archer, on form as ever.

Matlock came out fighting in the second half. However, the opposition were lucky to steal an early goal to put Matlock 2-1 down.

The Baileans players maintained composure and continued to attack with great runs down the wings from skilful midfielders Becky Bowman and Deb Greer.

Following this, a fantastic cross from captain Nic Martin was deflected into the back of the net by a diving Sarah Archer to take Matlock back up to 2-2.

For a very tense, end-to-end, last ten minutes, Matlock battled to finish the game all-square at 2-2.
