Matlock U17 RUFC emerged victorious with a 15-12 friendly win over Derby.
Although this was friendly game there is never the lack of rivalry when these two sides meet.
Derby took the first score of the game after some tough competition in Matlock’s half.
Derby quickly passed the ball wide and scored close in the corner, but were unable to kick the extra two points.
Matlock came back taking the ball in for a couple of phasers then shipping along the backs.
The ball then found Tom Lawrence, who is normally on the wing playing at outside centre, with his blistering speed managing to find a gap in the centres and then go outside the defending winger to score in the corner.
The game progressed with both sides sharing equal possession, when suddenly the game opened up as Lawrence found himself out on the wing as last man.
But using his instincts as a winger he kept himself off the white line and managed to go over in the corner to give Matlock a 10-5 half time lead.
The second half started as the first ended with great praise having to go to Matlock’s forward, especially at the breakdown securing and turning over ball. This hard work paid off as Ollie Beasley twisted and turned to score on the line. As expected Derby came back with their No3 showing great strength to hand off tackles and score giving Derby a life line especially as they kicked the extra two points.
However Matlock’s composure held as they negotiated the next 10 minutes until the final whistle blew giving them a well deserved 15-12 victory.
