Missed tackles are so costly

Ashfield U17s 24

Matlock U17s 5

Matlock arrived at Ashfield’s ground for this NLD match to find the pitches frozen and unplayable, so everyone trooped up the road to the sports ground on Unwin Road where the lads followed on from the under 15s’ game.

Matlock had the advantage of the slope and applied all the early pressure. However it was Ashfield who first put points on the board, from a penalty kick. The packs were well matched while Matlock dominated in the lineout, Joe Bestwick and Jack Fearn shining.

Overall, this was certainly a game where the scoreline did not truly reflect the efforts of Matlock. Possession was fairly equal but the home side capitalised on their opportunities and a few missed tackles to gain their advantage. With that in mind the scoreline could have been worse had Russell Cullum, Jacob Page and Andy Rose not made try-saving tackles.

In the second half, the home side battled through to touch down for a converted try.

Ashfield then increased their lead as a couple of missed tackles resulted in a converted try. Matlock scored their only points from ball won at a line-out, Brad Greenway passing out to Matt Hobbs to weave his way through. Loose defence then led to Ashfield notching up a final converted try.
