IT was another busy week at Matlock Golf Club with plenty of golfing activity, ending on Sunday with the club knockout finals.
Medal 11 winners were: Division One – Craig Barnes 71 (6) 65, Division Two – Craig Murphy 77 (12) 65, Division Three – Adam Gregory 81 (16) 65, Division Four – Daniel Thompson 84 (23) 61, Ladies Pat McGivern 109 (28) 81 Jenny Knight 92 (11) 81 lowest gross after countback.
On Monday, in the morning, the top 16 players from Derbyshire Schools played a knockout and in the afternoon the remaining eight competed for the semi-finals and final places, to be played in the following week.
On Wednesday, the Matlock Golf Club Mixed Open 4AM was held. Stiff opposition from teams fielding home players did not deter Chesterfield golfers Richard and Sally Truman and Stanedge’s Julie and Mark Griffiths from posting a winning score of 79 points.
Visiting competitors representing 35 different clubs from the region turned out for this 18 hole stableford. Keeping it local, other prizes went to players from Chesterfield, Matlock, Shirland, Renishaw and Stanedge golf clubs.
From further afield, Shrewsbury couple Yvette and Kevin Meaning squeezed into the sixth place team with assistance from Matlock’s Jack Greatorex and Judy Gasgoigne.
Other winners were nearest pin 8th hole Pat Holloway, Ormonde Fields 5ft and Ian Foskett of Wolstanton’s shot on the 15th hole could have been costly coming to rest just half and inch from a hole in one.

Bailey Memorial Trophy, Jamie Strutt and Nick Kay v Gareth Clarke and Mark Finney all-square, play-off to take place.
Matlock over 50s ladies’ golf team beat Southwell by six matches to one in the Spondon Trophy semi-final, played at Chatsworth Golf Club last Monday. Matlock’s lady captain Jenny Simpson commented: “The gale force winds on that day did not faze my team. I am extremely proud of the achievement. We have played in four tough rounds to get this far.”
The final against Breadsall Priory is to be played at Wollaton Golf Club, Nottingham, on Sunday, October 9.
The Vice–captain’s team played Ashbourne winning 6 to 0.
