ONLY a small contingent of Matlock and District Swimming Club swimmers travelled to Retford on October 22 to swim that club’s Early Bird meet, as the event was rather oversubcribed.
Nevertheless, this group managed to come home with an impressive haul of medals.
Helen Thornhill swam well to four medals from four attempts, including two first places. Lowri Heap won one second place and two third places as a return for her four swims.
Sisters Cerys and Sian Heap, the former celebrating her 12th birthday, and Claudia Bray, also swam a number of times without winning a top three. n n Continued on page 31
Harrison Fern was the only boy in attendance and enjoyed two medal winning swims from five, including a second place in the 100M freestyle where he set a new PB.
The previous weekend marked the first round of the National Arena League. Matlock were drawn to swim in Tamworth and travelled with a team of some 20 swimmers.
Finishing fourth, just two points away from third place, compares very favourably with last year when the club finished a distant sixth.
The second round takes place on November 10.
