Original Jesters in action during County Hall event

Matlock’s Original Jesters club featured in an afternoon of full contact martial arts action last Saturday.

There were 26 fighters making up 13 exciting bouts with seven out 0f the 26 representing local gym Original Jesters.

First up for the local gym was Stuart Atkinson, who was fighting under white collar boxing rules.

At the ripe old age of 52, this was more of a milestone achievement than just a fight and, after three rounds of toe to toe action, Stuart was given the win over his much younger opponent from Barnsley.

Next into the ring was ‘teddy bear ’Dave Evans, who also fighting under white collar boxing rules.

Dave faced a slightly heavier opponent from Middlesbrough and struggled to find his feet in the first round.

But he stepped out for the second a lot more confident, before stopping his opponent and taking his first KO victory.

Representing the juniors was local lad Declan Ward, fighting under light contact rules against Jay Casey from York.

Declan had an even opening round struggling a little with Jays lead leg, but once round two was under way and he’d worked the York lad out he went on to win a confident points decision.

Fourth into the ring for Jesters was Andy Clark. Andy had a short lived bout after having to retire from the fight after the first round due to breathing difficulties.

Next in was Richard ‘Rooftop’ Tomlinson against Barnsley’s Jonny Catton.

Richard was caught early on the fight with a body shot dropping him for an eight count.

During the second round Jonny managed to land a knee to the same spot, leaving Richard unable to beat the count.

Fighting under full contact kickboxing rules was Jester’s Joss ‘the boss’ Bevan.

Joss faced Nottingham’s Joel Goodacre. Joe came out all guns blazing from the bell, but a confident Joss soaked it up and took control stopping the Nottingham lad in the third round securing his first win by stoppage.

Finally representing the Original Jesters was Karl ‘tinker’ Johnston. Karl currently holds the Professional English K1 title, but due to shin injuries he made his boxing debut.

Karl faced reputable and well know ‘disco Dave Lowes from Huddersfield.

Dave showed his experience and proved awkward for the initial two rounds, but by the third Karl had his number and stepped up the gas to land some powerful shots to win by KO in the third.
