Reaction was mixed last Wednesday after Matlock Water Polo Club’s 18-6 home defeat to Hucknall in a friendly pre-season game that worked as an ironing out process for both squads.
The Nottinghamshire side brought a strong squad with players unlikely to feature in this year’s official league and cup fixtures.
Matlock brought more than the 13 squad members required, meaning Will Fry and James Barber guested for the away team.
Once again, this fourth pre-season game in as many months enabled the Derbyshire side’s up and coming fringe players to gain more experience in a competitive setting.
Passing, swimming and movement off the ball showed improvement and remaining deficiencies in equal measures at differing times.
Captain Richard Massey was positive after the game. “We had a very young side out there learning the game against some very good players. I am confident we are getting there.”
Youngster Luke Elliott top scored for Matlock and the opposition’s Phil Elwell just about managed to stay awake in the final quarter after some recent very sleepless nights.
Matlock’s squad continue to prepare with two friendlies next month prior to their late February official start to the campaign.
Season ticket sales are going well with the special “first season at the Arc” offer still valid until February 17. Sign up now to avoid disappointment.
