The fifth round on the National XC Mountain Bike Series took place at the weekend at Langdon Hills Country Park in Essex.

The course was very fast and provided entertaining racing for the many spectators who lined it.

Local riders William Gascoyne, riding for Matlock Cycling Club, and Arthur Green, riding for Hope Race Team, had excellent podium finishes in their respective age categories.

Gascoyne was a comfortable second in the juvenile male category. Gascoyne had tried to stay with eventual winner Daniel Tulett of Hargrove Cycles, but Tulett proved too strong, opening up a 90-second gap by the finish line.

Gascoyne then beat David Barnes of Condor Cycles by over two minutes into third spot.

Arthur Green, riding in the older Youth category, came home in third spot.

The Youth category was a fiercely-fought race, with just 44 seconds separating the top four riders.

Matlock Cycling Club’s Gregg Booker also had a solid ride in the Youth category, finishing in side the top 20 in 18th spot.

Meanwhile, Matlock Cycling Club’s Ashford five-mile time-trial Championship event took place on Tuesday, having been postponed from earlier in the season.

Heavy rain threatened to stop the riders after a torrential downpour, but the cycling gods were smiling down as the clouds parted, allowing the sun to shine through on the ten contestants who took to the start line.

Overall points winner Chris Green notched up yet another victory, recording a time of 11 minutes and 18 seconds. The win never looked in doubt, with Green finishing 18 seconds ahead of second-placed rider Matt Ingram.

Patrick Smart once again had a sub 12-minute ride, narrowly missing out on beating his new course record from last week, finishing in a time of 11:57.

Results: 1 Chris Green, 2 Matt Ingram 11:36, 3 Mike Blair 11:37, 4 Patrick Smart 11:57, 5 Sam Thorne 12:23, 6 Josh Eaton 12:35, 7 Kyle Fantom 12:55, 8 John White 13:37, 9 Ben Turner 15:53, 10 Hannah Newman 23:33

Normal service was resumed on the Thursday night 7.4-mile Short Hilly time-trial, as the traffic lights in Tansley meant the full course could be used for the first time on three weeks.

Chris Green recorded his second win within the week, as he was the only rider to finish under 20 minutes, recording 19:44.

Second place went to Sam Thorne on a season’s best time of 21:44, while Patrick Smart’s good form continued as he finished in third spot on 21:58 – also a season’s best time.

Chris Sharp also recorded a season’s best time, finishing in fourth spot on 22:07.

Results: 1 Chris Green 19:44, 2 Sam Thorne 21:44, 3 Patrick Smart 21:58, 4 Chris Sharp 22:07, 5 Steve Goodall 22:52, 6 Matt Clarke 23:09, 7 Kyle Fantom 23:40, 8 John White 24:38, 9 Josh Eaton 25:27
