The annual four-race Hilly Tour of the Derwent Valley came down to a sprint for the line at the Rowsley Four Mile Race.

After two events, only two seconds divided a former tour champion, Ian Murdey of the Beaumont Leys club, from Ripley’s Dean Taylor and, in the pouring rain, the judges could not split the two protaganists as they sprinted over the finish line.

So, all would have to be decided on the very tough four-mile road race at Rowsley where, within 500m of the start, a very steep 1km hill faced the runners and, after a second significant rise to the two-mile marker – reached in 14.45! – the course descended to the finish where Dean took the initiative and widened his lead to four seconds to win the most exciting tour for years.
