Ready for final game of year

by Colin Ingley

Last Monday’s friendly game at Hucknall (see the report in next week’s Mercury) will have acted as further confirmation that Matlock intend to be well-prepared for an early start to an important season in the New Year.

On the back of the previous week’s game at Stafford, there was no let-up in training on Sunday, despite being only one week from Christmas Day.

Former coach Richard Massey is still traumatised by memories of the dark days of January 2005, when players returned in dreadful shape after the Christmas festivities.

“I still wake up sweating and breathless reliving those pre-season sessions and recalling all of us being unable to climb out the pool due to excess fat. Counselling over the years, however, has helped.”

It was ensured by the club’s coaching staff that the final curry night of the season last Thursday would not do undue harm, at the time of going to press.

The Derby social involving some players tomorrow, however, may be a calorie too far!

The club’s first-ever set of trunks, complete with club emblem print were made available this week and provided the players’ wives/girlfriends with an obvious Christmas present idea.

“Just what I’ve always wanted,” was Tom Barratt’s reply despite really wanting a new VW Golf.

The club hopes you do better and wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas.
