The fourth round of this year’s cyclo cross National Trophy Series took place on Sunday at Temple Park in South Shields.

Youth Under 16s leader Will Gascoyne of Matlock Cycling Club was looking to extend his overall series lead, but was up against the nation’s top riders including local East Midlands rivals Tom Weeds of Derby Mercury and Arthur Green of Hope Race Team.

Right from the start, a select group of five riders including Gascoyne, Green and Weeds, along with Hargroves Cycles Tom Franklin and Condor Cycles David Barnes took to the front, leaving the chasing pack well behind.

Gascoyne and Franklin forged ahead after the first few laps, but the chasing trio were never far behind.

In a sprint finish, Franklin just managed to get the better of Arthur Green to take a fine win, while Barnes took the final podium position with Gascoyne just missing out by a bike’s length for fourth, with Weeds in fifth spot.

In the Youth Under 16 girls event, Matlock Cycling Club’s Sarah Lomas also narrowly missed out on a podium finish, coming home in fourth spot – just 39 seconds down on Abby-Mae Parkinson of RST Trigon’s winning time.

Local Zepnat Race Team rider Diane Lee also competed in the women’s senior category, and put in a fine performance to finish inside the top 10, coming home in 8th spot overall in what was a very high quality field.
