Hathersage-based Ginetta Junior Championship team Hillspeed celebrated yet more success at Rockingham last weekend with points leader Seb Morris racing superbly to claim his 11th win of the campaign in round 15 of the season.
Morris just missed out on pole position in qualifying for the first of the weekend’s two races by a mere 0.016 seconds but at the start of Saturday afternoon’s encounter, he made a great getaway and immediately moved into the lead on the run through Turn One of the oval banking.
Through the tricky Deene Hairpin, the 15-year-old Morris slipped to second after a bold move around the outside by Niall Murray but at the same corner a lap later the Hillspeed ace swept past the Irishman on the inside to retake first place.
In round 16 on Sunday, Morris had to mount a determined recovery when contact at the third turn, Yentwood, on lap one pitched his car round and dropped him down outside the top ten.
Fired-up to make his way as far up the order as possible, the championship leader produced a sensational drive to climb into fourth place on the eighth and final lap.
Such was the intensity of the battle over the final podium placing, Seb was able to close in at a rapid rate on the last tour and crossed the line just 0.186 seconds shy of what would have been a truly remarkable recovery to the rostrum.
“Even so, fourth place was a superb result.
“Seb had a very good weekend indeed”, commented team principal Richard Ollerenshaw, “We’re delighted with the win and the way he came back through in race two was outstanding, he really fought hard and was unlucky not to make it onto the podium again.”
“He drove exceptionally well.”
