Matlock Cycling Club sisters Ellie and Libby Smith both came away with gold medals in the British Schools Cycling Association’s National Rollers Championships in Lichfield on Sunday.

The championships were run as an ‘omnium competition’, decided over two races of 500m and one race of 1,000m.

Libby was the first to ride in the under eights girls heats, clocking 36 seconds for the 500m and one minute and 21 seconds for the 1,000m.

Winning by a convincing margin in each of her three heats, Libby added her second consecutive BSCA National Championship of the season.

Older sister Ellie had a closer contest on her hands in the under 10s girls heats, clocking 33 seconds for the 500m and one minute 11 seconds for the 1,000m, edging Jennie Roberts (East Bradford CC) and Emelia Reynolds (Halesowen ACCC) into a ride-off for the other medals.

With new gearing limits coming into force this year, the two Wirksworth Junior School pupils also had the honour of establishing new national records for the respective distances.

Then nine riders bravely signed on to contest Matlock Cycling Clubs AH/7 time-trial, which was held early on Sunday during cold winds and persistent driving rain.

Chris Metcalfe got off to a winning start riding for the first time for his new team – Charge Bikes. Metcalfe had an excellent season last year capped off with another solid performance in the Notts & Derby Cyclo Cross League.

His reward was the offer to ride for Charge Bikes as they look to strengthen their racing squad. Metcalfe made light work of the hilly course, finishing in 18 minutes and 57 seconds. His winning margin was 17 seconds over the inform Peter Colledge, who was comfortably the fastest veteran on the day.

Paul Hodgkinson came a distant third with a time of 21 minutes and 40 seconds. Once again, there were impressive rides by the ever-improving Patrick Smart who finished in 22 minutes and 49 seconds in fifth spot to be the fastest youth rider, and Christine Howard who finished in sixth at 23 minutes and one second, to be the fastest lady.

Results: 1 Chris Metcalfe 18:57, 2 Peter Colledge 19:14, 3 Paul Hodgkinson 21:40, 4 Neil Armitage 21:54, 5 Patrick Smart 22:49, 6 Christine Howard 23:01, 7 Kyle Fantom 23:09, 8 Mike Bradley 24:40, 9 Josh Eaton 30:45
