Sunshine heralds successful week at Matlock Golf Club

THE long-awaited sunshine and warmth arrived, making a hectic and successful week of golf that much more enjoyable at Matlock Golf Club.

On Monday, the Ladies Silver beat Bakewell at home 3.5 to 1.5 while Tuesday saw the captain, lady captain and 34 mixed players hold their joint away day at Gainsborough Golf Club.

Participants enjoyed a great day with the winning team scoring 82 pts, made up of captain Bob Whyld, lady captain Veda Kay, Julie and Bill Munden.

The Seniors played at Chatsworth, under the leadership of Graham Hunt, enjoying an excellent carvery and a 6–0 victory. The vice-captain’s team also played at Chatsworth, losing 3.5 to 2.5.

In the Spondon Trophy, Men’s Team C won against Ashbourne 6–1, the ladies beat Erewash 5.5 to 1.5, and, in the Spondon Plate, the Men’s Team A beat Ormond Fields 5.5 to 1.5.

In the Derbyshire Ladies County Golf Association Spring Meeting Medal held at Kedleston Park Golf Club, Diane Gray won the Coronation Medal and best nett prize with a nett 72. Jill Smith won the Dorothy Spalding Cup and best gross prize with a gross 96.

Highlight of the week on Sunday was a full card for the Men’s Invitation Day. However, hot sunny weather and windy conditions made it difficult to achieve high scores.

Prize winners were: 1st Graham Coppen (Matlock) and Geoff Miller (Kedleston) 43 pts, 2nd Julian Mason and J Boden 43pts, 3rd Jim Watson and J Duck 41pts.
