West Bridgford U13s 0
Matlock RFC U13s 49
West Bridgford won the toss and opted to play with the wind at their backs in the first half.
A deep kick by Matlock was answered with a high punt into the Matlock half, superbly caught by Ben Quinlan, who ran hard and fast down his wing, only to be caught in the opposition 22. A lovely pop to Ashley Cullum in support and the fly-half was over for the first try in the first minute.
This became the pattern of the first half. West Bridgford, always under pressure in possession, went for the kick downwind. Each time, the ball caught by Matlock and followed by hard running in the backs.
Excellent work saw Joe Thompson and Joe Smithurst add to the try count. West Bridgford now tried to run the ball and found Matlock’s tackling was as proficient as their catching. A concerted effort by the home team saw them in the Matlock 22, winning the ruck-ball. They had an overlap and looked dangerous. Their fly-half whipped it out to his centre, only for Ash Cullum to make an inspired interception and race the length of the pitch to touch down on the stroke of half-time.
Matlock made nine changes at half-time to accommodate all the travellers in the squad. Would this disrupt the pattern and their superiority? Not a bit. Moving like a well-oiled machine, the lads surprised coaches and parents alike with their play.
This second half was played entirely in the West Bridgford half. Unable to break through, the home team tried kick after kick to move from their own 22. Alas, the wind was now in their faces.
Further tries were added by Jak Cooper, Sam Bassett, Tom Osborn with a brace and Ash Cullum with his third.
