Wain inflicts pain on visitors with crucial last-minute leveller

Matlock Baileans’ first XI came away with a 2-2 draw from a bottom-of-the-table battle at home to Northampton on Saturday.

Northampton came out strongly and took an early lead, and although Matlock responded well and raised their game they were unable to convert any chances before half-time.

In the second-half Matlock came back fighting hard with Sarah Archer scoring the equaliser five minutes in.

The next 20 minutes saw some outstanding saves by man-of-the-match Danielle Archer, with her defence also performing admirably.

Northampton went back in front from a short corner but despite carrying a few injuries Matlock battled back and a last minute short corner resulted in Sarah Wain deflecting in the equaliser.

l Matlock’s fifths were in action against Ashbourne and despite Baileans losing out 6-0 they still produced some find defensive play to foil many Ashbourne attacks.

In an icy wind, Matlock started well with Sally Bradbury, Sophie Grattidge and Lauren Craven all testing the defence, but having started the game two players short, Ashbourne’s team soon became complete and that changed the course of the game.

Keeper Liz English blocked an effort but the rebound was turned in for the first, before three more followed by half-time.

Matlock did create chances but couldn’t convert and two more Ashbourne goals in the second-half sealed their win - Immy Nieper being name Matlocks’ player of the match.
