Mow make it through on penalties after gruelling semi-final encounter

Matlock & District League

Barley Mow booked their place in this year’s Matlock & District League Cup final by beating Black Hippo 6-5 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

Hippo took the lead when C Gill scored against the run of play and that was how it remained until half-time.

Barley Mow equalised early in the second-half when Matt Lees converted from close range, and the tie went to extra-time.

Mow went ahead through Jay Albertz’s volley and Ash Morton soon made it 3-1, but Hippo fought back to level things at 3-3 and force penalties, from which Mow emerged victorious.

In the Invitation Shield, Codnor won 1-0 away at AFC Lea Holloway, the winning goal coming when Stu Ryan beat two players on the left before crossing for Mark Gotheridge to notch the winner.

League games saw Ashover win 3-1 at Shirebrook Rangers in League One, while AFC South Wingfield were also 3-1 winners over Wirksworth Albion in League Two.

Shirland MW v Laburnum Saints in League One and Darley Dale Red Star v Hurst Farm United in the Invitation Shield were postponed.
