derwent Valley Orienteering members tackled Dave Skidmore’s well thought out Calke Park course recently, competing amid a grey mist that stubbornly remained all day.
Competitors had to rely on their own navigational skills to complete their runs over the parkland, fellow competitors soon disappearing into the grey murky distance.
Using the extensive parkland and the surrounding woods, competitors rose to the challenge and posted very creditable times.
Nine courses were on offer, colour-coded according to age and ability.
Andrew Powell from Nottinghamshire Orienteers won the top course in an overall time of 56 minutes and 3 seconds for the 9.4km race.
Notable results for Derbyshire orienteers were a first places for Rachel Duckworth on the White course, Harry Graham on the Yellow course. Sarah Duckworth was second and Nicholas Gordon third on the Orange course.
The next major event with course for beginners will be at Shining Cliff Woods, near Ambergate on January 15.
