Matlock and District League round-up
Two sides from the Manor Pharmacy Matlock & District Football League have booked their place in the Derbyshire Cup final.
Woodthorpe Rovers went through after beating Tintwistle Athletic with a hard-fought but deserved 1-0 win, while Dronfield Town’s cup hopes went up in smoke after Hopflower dominated the game from start to finish with a fantastic 5-0 win.
A representative from the league said: “We are so proud of all our teams that play in the Matlock & District Football League and to have two teams representing us in the Derbyshire Cup final is a dream come true.
“We would like to congratulate both teams and wish them both the very best of luck for the final.”
Elsewere, strong winds and heavy ground led to a slow start for Matlock Sports who held firm against a Wirksworth Albion team out to avenge an early season defeat.
Within 12 minutes Les McGuinness saw his shot hit the post for Matlock who were coping well against the wind, but the perfect nerve-calmer came after 38 minutes when Steve Pardey got the final touch in a goalmouth scramble to put Matlock 1-0 up.
The second-half saw Matlock play the better football and it wasn’t long before goal sensation Callam Lytham got onto the scoresheet by looping the ball over the keeper to make it 2-0.
Albion began piling on the pressure and after several heroic saves form Matlock’s young keeper Harry Westnedge, a goal finally came from Craig Wheeldon.
But Matlock then stepped up a gear and Lytham scored with a fine solo effort to end Albion’s fightback.
