Fine weather greeted this year’s Wirksworth Carnival five-a-side tournament last weekend, with 28 teams entering from around the area.

After battling through morning group stages and early afternoon knockout rounds, the semi-finals came as the hot sun began to take its toll on the players.

Rowsley 86 edged past Woolley Moor 2-0 to book a place in the final, and it was the same score in the other half of the draw as Lea & Holloway overcame Wirksworth Town to cap a strong performance in the tournament.

Rowsley took the lead mid way through the first half of the final thanks to Liam Hallam .

Although Holloway forced keeper Nick Baker into a few smart saves, Rowsley kept the ball well in the heat and Anthony Porter drilled home their second goal during the second-half to seal the win.

Organiser Russell Hollinshead said: “Congratulations to both teams on their part in an enjoyable day, and thanks to those who helped with food and refreshments, refereeing and the groundstaff.”
