Runners out in force at Allestree Park meeting

It’s been a busy time for members of Matlock Athletics Club.

Christine Howard competed in the ‘Hit the Trail 5’ hilly trail run organised by Bellevue Racers in Stockport on January 5, the day after she had led the team home in the Derbyshire County Cross Country Championships at Shipley Park.

In the trail race she was first LV40, fourth overall lady in a time of 33 minutes in a field of 300.

Last weekend saw Colin Davenport who was first and Simon Brister who was thirrd in the Whitworth Thread on Saturday, also take on the fourth race in the Booths Decorators League (BDL) at Allestree Park, Derby on Sunday.

Mick Moorhouse also took on the BDL, having claimed first MV60 trophy in the North Midlands League Cross Country championships on Saturday.

The first race of the weekend was the Whitworth Thread 5k around Whitworth Park and, despite a sunny forecast, it rained for the first time.

Eleven runners recorded PBs, including mother and daughter Michelle and Isabelle Lester.

Colin Davenport who recorded a very fast time of 17.34 to win and Matlock AC’s Alison Pye was first lady in 23.32.

Next month’s run will be on Saturday, February 8 at 9am.

The North Midlands League Cross Country was the last in the series of four, held at Wollaton Park, Nottingham.

The U11 girls’ team of Lizzie Webster, Bronwyn Lessiter, Michaela Dick and Isobel Croft claimed sixth overall in the series.

In the U13s girls’ race Elspeth Grant was sixth and in the U15 boys’ race Joe Hallas and Sam Allen came tenth and 18th respectively.

Nicky Dick claimed first LV50 and Mick Moorhouse first MV60 trophies in the Series.

The fourth race in the BDL on Sunday took place in Allestree Park, Derby.

First-timer Ben Cartwright claimed seventh place in a field of 248 in a time of 39.25, the third senior home, while fellow debutant John Hurley took 92nd place in 48.50, the first MV55.

Martin Lea 84th, 47.59; Greg Woodwood 86th, 48.10; Ed Hoon 89th, 48.21, 2nd U20 Male; Simon Brister 97th, 49.17, 1st MV60; Mick Moorhouse 110th, 50.26, 2nd MV60; Jim Thorneycroft 122nd, 52.10 and Julie Goodwin 193rd, 60.06, 3rd LV45. This leaves the team in sixth place after four races.
