Sporty students take the plaudits

SPORTING students at Highfields School in Matlock enjoyed an excellent display at the Derbyshire Dales Sports Awards.

Sam Mak won male student volunteer of the year, Jenny O’Reilly was the runner-up in female volunteer of the year category, Joshua Haynes was junior sportsman of the year, Maisie Packard was female student volunteer of the year, Emma Erskine junior sportswomen of the year and Joe Firth runner-up in club of the year category.

Meanwhile, the school recently hosted a Cluster Tag Rugby Competition for local feeder schools with Tansley School winning the boys events for both years three/four and years five/six.

Highfields sportsleaders students were heavily involved in the event.

Year 11 students refereed, years nine and ten leaders ran the line and also oversaw workshops for the visitors.

Rural Derbyshire coach/leadership officer Chris Burns and Matlock Rugby Club’s Bill Halstead were in attendance to offer help and support.
