STUDENTS from the Derbyshire Dales have had their design picked to adorn a commemorative London 2012 flag and torch for the Rural Derbyshire School Sport Partnership.

A competition was launched last November to over 70 schools, as well as nurseries, brownie, scout and youth groups in the area.

David Allen, managing director of local company Twiggs, steel fabricators in Matlock, offered to support the project with the help and expertise of engineers Alan Boden and Terry Hancock.

They chose a striking design by students Jess Batsford and Ellie Burke, with laser cut design depicting a union jack top and polished steel handle.

Students from Anthony Gell School - Bethany Ayers, Amber Moore and Sam Hughes (pictured) with their winning flag design were delighted to discover it form part of the Olympic Torch celebrations in Matlock on Friday when their flag will be raised in Matlock Park during the schools procession.
