Thirds win in fine fashion

Matlock 3rds 3

Woodlands 0

Missing six of their squad and starting the match in a massive hail storm, things did not look promising for the thirds.

But the match started briskly as both sides settled into their hockey and it was Matlock who began to dominate.

Up front, Leyanne Beacham and Laura Singleton linked together fantastically throughout the match and the first goal came from Beacham who seemed to dribble the ball for an eternity in front of the bemused Woodlands keeper before slotting it into the net.

There followed a period of midfield scrabbling with Charlotte Kidd, Cath Croney, Dani Bacon and Katy Price never giving up.

At the back, little got past newcomers Holly Jones and Susannah Doxy, both having excellent games.

Veterans Jenny Kennedy and Jane Proctor both had solid games with one or two comedy moments, but were never really worried by Woodlands attacks.

The second goal came from a lovely spell of play with Matlock holding possession and Beacham passing a perfect cross into the circle for Singleton to fling into the roof of the net.

Matlock kept things going in the second-half, and another great cross tight into the keeper led to Kidd finishing off at close range and the match was sealed.

One Woodlands break gave keeper Amanda Jaques her only touch of the ball which she cleared with ease.

This result puts Matlock two points clear at the top of the league.
