Hope Valley League Division 1
Winster Wasps 2 Hope Sports 1
Winster produced a stunning performance to overcome leaders Hope Sports.
Facing a team who have scored in excess of 100 goals and who had embarrassed Winster in their previous encounter, it was always going to be a stern test for the Wasps as they had to balance containment and attack.
Although the visitors enjoyed most of the early possession and took the lead through a fumbled goal with just 20 minutes played 20 minutes, as the half wore on Winster sensed there was something more to the game than just a Hope procession.
They began to pick holes in the defence and when Ashley Dooley set up James Ford to calmly stroke home an equaliser it was only what Winster deserved going into half-time.
Hope needed all three points to maintain their title ambitions and the second-half brought a barrage of attacks and for Winster to survive was going to take a little luck, and Matt Rhodes was also at his absolute best in goal.
A fabulous array of saves ranging from the spectacular to the near impossible denied the visitors, and as Hope turned to desperation in the final throws of the game they began to push more men forward, which spectacularly backfired as it allowed Ford time and space to deliver a wonderful 30-yard strike and gift all three points to the Wasps.
