England hockey star and former Matlock Bailean Ellie Watton will return to the area next week to train the club’s current crop of young players.
She will be putting the Matlock U14 squad through their paces at Wirksworth Leisure Centre on Monday night (6-8pm) before they start their England Hockey Cup campaign and then teaching some of the older members of the club some new skills.
Ellie, who comes from Ashover and attended Highfields School, played all her hockey with Matlock until she went to university.
After breaking into the full England squad last year she has left her teaching job in Rutland to become a full-time member of the England team based at Bisham Abbey, with the aim to make the GB team for the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Many of the Club travelled to Glasgow to support Ellie when she appeared for England in the recent Commonwealth Games, where she secured a silver medal.
Meanwhile, ‘Back to Hockey’ sessions are continuing on Mondays from 6-8pm at Wirksworth for any ladies who haven’t played for a while and want to get back into the game.
The club’s first and second teams train Tuesdays from 7-9pm and junior sessions are on Thursday evenings at Wirksworth from 6pm and Monday evenings from 4-5pm at Arc Leisure Centre for primary age beginners.
