Wirksworth U13s have been crowned Notts & Derbys Border Youth Cricket League champions of champions after overcoming Denby at The Copper Yard.
After bowling out Denby for 89, Wirksworth knocked off their target for the loss of just three wickets to seal the win.
Denby won the toss and chose to bat on a warm summer’s evening, their openers cautious and sensible but held in check by fine opening bowling from Luke Eaton and Declan Kidger-Preston, both fast and accurate.
After ten overs, Denby were 44-1 but with that being the half way point there was still plenty of scope for them to push on.
But, perhaps too over-confident, Denby panicked in the face of some sensibly steady bowling with both Mikey Rowlatt, who took two wickets, and Matt Leaske with two wickets and a sharp run out, hitting the stumps.
Michael Wright’s flighted leg spin and Tarran Margat’s steadiness also caused problems, Margat also claiming a wicket.
Six Denby batsmen were dismissed without scoring and the fielders supported the bowlers with enthusiastic and competent throwing.
Having dismissed Denby in 19 overs, Michael Wright (25 retired) and Charlie Mellor (21) gave Wirksworth a steady start in reply.
They passed the half way point at 45 without loss and the partnership made 51 before Mellor was out.
Richard Tunnicliffe (13 not out) showed his class and experience in a responsible innings, guiding Matt Leaske (8)
Kidger-Preston (7 not out) assisted Tunnicliffe at the end as Wirksworth, captained by Biilly Rowlatt and also featuring Tom Payne and Charlie Pearce, raced to victory with ten balls to spare.
For his stylish innings and accurate swing bowling that earned him two wickets, Charlie Mellor was judged man-of-the-match in what was a fine team performance overall.
