Derby Mercury organised and promoted round ten of this season’s Notts and Derby Cyclo Cross League on Saturday.

Markeaton Park in Derby was the venue and the weather was dry, cold and sunny, but very muddy in places.

Once again, Matlock Cycling Club youngsters shone through in the various age categories.

For the first time this year, the U14 and U16 girls started together in one group. Matlock CC’s Ellie Smith pulled away with a leading group of five riders despite being in the younger age category.

By the second lap, Ellie had taken the lead from Maddie Gammons of Bourne Wheelers and was looking very strong.

On a day when the mud and fallen leaves caused problems for many riders, Ellie’s decision not to change her bike eventually caught up with her.

Stopping to unclog her bike on the last lap, Ellie was passed by Derby Mercury’s Isabelle Boon who came home first under 16 girl.

Ellie had the consolation of winning the U14s race, beating her friend and rival Poppy Wildman of Nottingham Clarion into second.

In the boys U14s race, Smith’s teammate John Webster was unlucky to finish off the podium, eventually coming fifth after a tight battle between the leading riders.

Matlock Cycling Club’s Louis Swindell came third in the boys U9s race, which was once again won by Derby Mercury’s Otto Chilton.

Holly Hoy and Harriet Limb made it a superb one-two for Matlock in the girls U9s race, as the pair were comfortably ahead of the chasing pack.

In the U12 girls race, Ava Oxley was once again victorious, but was made to work hard for the win by a chasing trio of Matlock riders – Amelie Wayte, Sarah Briggs and Libby Smith, who finished in second, third, and fourth spots respectively.

Local riders Lee Shunburne of Fosse Racing Team and Diane Lee of Team Mule Bar Girls were the winners of the men’s and women’s senior race.
