Youngsters learn a cricketing lesson or two

After the sunshine came the showers as the Darley Dale youngsters in the U11 Kwik Dales Division of the Notts & Derby Border Youth Cricket League found out about real English cricket as they played through the showers at Baslow on Friday.

The B team scored 128-3 against Matlock B. Matlock replied with 132-2, effectively winning the very closely fought contest by losing one less wicket in their innings.

The youngsters were not too downhearted though as they bowled very well in the second match, restricting Baslow to 119-6 with Emily Hurst and Chris Cater taking two wickets each.

In reply, Darley Dale B finished on 127-5 to take their record to: won two, lost two so far this season.

The A team were too good for Ashbourne B, scoring 189-0 in reply to Ashbourne’s 113-6. But that was just a warm-up for the main event when Darley Dale A took on the only other unbeaten side, Matlock A.

Matlock batted first and a careful defensive approach, coupled with aggressive strokeplay, saw them close on 154-1. Darley overcame the setback of a wicket in the first over through aggressive strokes from Reuben Dakin and Ben Sellors to be in contention as the last over started. However, some excellent bowling made scoring very difficult and Darley ended ten runs short on 144-1.
