BELPER'S passion for UFOs has been reignited after a resident reported seeing strange lights in the sky.
It is almost a year to the day since the News reported on sightings of strange, unexplained lights in the town.
Several residents had contacted us last January to say they had seen flashes in the sky, which were eventually explained as a fault on
an electrical transformer in Milford.
Now, another resident has come forward to say she spotted some strange lights over Belper at the end of December.
The Acorn Drive resident, who did not wish to be named, was out walking her dog along Green Lane and Mill Street on Monday, December 28, when she saw a very bright golden light, hovering high in the sky over the Chevin, near Farnah Green.
She said the light was around the same size and shape as a street light, but much higher – too high to be cast by a helicopter or plane.
It was initially steady, before it rose up into the sky very quickly until it was barely visible to the naked eye, she added.
The resident said: "The golden ball was at this time very small but still visible when it passed behind a cloud. I waited for the cloud to pass over but saw nothing more. I am sure what I saw was unusual and just wish I had been in company with someone, other than my canine friend, who could coroborate this account."
In last year's incidents, flashes of lights were spotted by residents in William Street, in the town centre, and Heydon Close, to the east of the town.
Electricity company E-on said the flashes had come from a transformer on Red Lane, in Milford.
A spokesman for the company, which is based in London, said this time: "There is nothing to show it is anything to do with our equipment."
The resident said she had enjoyed a view over the Chevin from her home for 11 years, and had never seen anything like this before.
She added: "It's an extremely familiar sight to me in all weathers and on that night there was good visibility. In addition it seems so bizarre when it is almost a year to the day since the similar sightings were reported.
"I wanted to report it in case others also saw something inexplicable."
The sighting happened between 4.45pm and 5pm on Bank Holiday Monday.
