Mermaid, the latest offering at Nottingham Playhouse, is up and running this week.

Written and directed by Polly Teale, it is a bold reimagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of love, loss and desire, and can be seen at the theatre until Saturday, March 21.

This is a co-production between Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company and Shared Experience.

Below the ocean there is no death or pain or separation. Above the water is the modern world beset with war, poverty and need.

On her 16th birthday, a mermaid rises up to the surface, leaving her childhood behind forever when she falls in love with a mortal prince.

She knows that she can no longer live at the bottom of the ocean, but must she destroy herself in order to be loved?

Shared Experience is renowned for its thrilling adaptations of literary classics.

Writer/director Polly Teale here transplants Andersen’s haunting tale to a contemporary setting.

Using a choir of local young women to create an unearthly musical landscape, Shared Experience will be conjuring up the world of the mermaids.

Tickets to see this production are available by calling Nottingham Playhouse’s box office on 0115 9419419.
