Applications for the 2012 Derby City Open Exhibition are now available.

The exhibition, set to return to Derby Museum this December, offers artists an exciting platform to showcase their work, with entries coming in the form of a fascinating range of paintings, sculpture, drawings, print, crafts, film and photography, arranged with playful juxtapositions that celebrate the artists’ creativity.

Cllr Martin Repton, cabinet member for leisure and culture, encouraged artists to submit works to the open, and said: “This dynamic, annual exhibition provides a brilliant opportunity to celebrate creativity and originality of the region’s diverse artistic community. Derby is at the forefront of championing the work of upcoming artists and I am positive that this year’s submissions will be of the extremely high calibre that we have come to expect.”

As well as offering promising artists the opportunity to display their work, the exhibition provides them with the chance to get their hands on a range of outstanding, career expanding prizes.

The exhibition is supported by Derbyshire’s artistic community, with prizes including three months studio hire courtesy of Evolve @ Bank’s Mill, the opportunity to feature in Derbyshire Life Magazine’s January 2013 edition and £350 worth of artist materials from John E Wright. The overall winner of the 2012 Derby City Open will receive a prize of £1,500 from Derby Museum and Art Gallery.

Each year, three new high profile judges are invited to select a number of works from the large number of entries. This year’s panel is made up of photographer, Brian Griffin HonFRPS, independent curator, Anna Douglas and the artist, writer and curator, Lesley Guy.

Last year, over 700 artworks were entered into the Derby City Open and 100 works were selected to feature in the exhibition. This limited number of selections allows each work to be carefully considered, scrutinised, compared and discussed resulting in a dynamic, high quality and vibrant exhibition.

To enter a work into this year’s exhibition artists need to complete an application form which are available from the Derby Museum and Art Gallery and Pickford’s House Museum or they can be downloaded from http://www.derbymuseums.org/

Derby City Open 2012 is part of Open Season 2012, in association with East Midlands Visual Arts Network.

The exhibition will open to the public at the beginning of December and will run until the end of January 2013.
