Bakewell Choral Society to serve up the full English

Bakewell Choral Society will be performing John Rutter's Requiem in Matlock on March 25.

The programme also features Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens and Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs.

The concert will be held in Matlock Methodist Church, Oak Road, Matlock.

The Requiem was first performed in 1985 at the United Methodist Church, Dallas, Texas, conducted by the composer.

Though it naturally has its dark moments, the work is unmistakably optimistic in its message of hope and comfort, and it is not entirely surprising that after the tragic events of 9/11 it was this setting of the Requiem that was the preferred choice of music at the many memorial services which followed across the United States.

With the inclusion of works by Parry and Vaughan Williams, this promises to be a wonderful evening of English music.

The choir is fortunate to be joined by soloists Ella Taylor, soprano and Andrew Heighton, baritone.
