Derby Cathedral Quarter’s programme of Saturday entertainment has been expanded this year with even more to see and do in the area.

The CQ Saturdays events commence this week on March 21 with Knickerbocker Glorious live entertainment in the Market Place from 11am–3pm and Handcrafted at the Cathedral Quarter under the Guildhall Arches between 10am and 4pm.

Both these events are produced in partnership with Derby arts promoters Furthest from the Sea.

The programme will then move up a gear in May with CQ Saturdays Street Circus in partnership with Déda Producing returning to the Market Place on May 9.

For the first time this year, CQ Saturdays will also feature new street theatre entertainment on the fourth Saturday of every month between May and August, courtesy of Ashrow Theatre.

The first street theatre event will take place on Saturday May 23 with characters in Edwardian costume taking to the Cathedral Quarter streets, performing short sketches and routines from period literature, interacting with the publicand providing information on the historical aspects of the Cathedral Quarter.

Paul Hurst, vice chair of the Cathedral Quarter Management Group, which drives forward activities under the area’s BID status, explained: “The programme will be even more extensive this year – showcasing the best of local and regional performance and creative talent.

“CQ Saturdays is part of our objective as local businesses working together under the Business Improvement District (BID) programme to provide a great lifestyle experience for visitors and people working in the area.

“As well as a host of first class entertainment, these events create a platform for businesses to promote themselves and attract new customers. This regular programme has become established as a visitor attraction and gives people another reason to come and enjoy everything that the Cathedral Quarter has to offer.

Matt McGuinness from Furthest From the Sea continued: “Derby is becoming known as a festival city and CQ Saturdays is becoming part of this growing scene – showcasing a wide range of established and emerging artists in their respective fields.

“There is a huge wealth of talent in this area and the monthly Knickerbocker Glorious and Handcrafted atthe Cathedral Quarter are fantastic showcases for artists with something for all the family to enjoy.

“After a series of successful events in the previous two years, CQ Saturdays is really building momentum, attracting high quality acts and local craftspeople to the Cathedral Quarter. We are looking forward to introducing even more new and exciting entertainment.”
