THE Flowerpot in Derby opens its doors this week to a pair of new wave legends, starting on Friday, March 25, with a visit by Eddie And The Hot Rods.

This year sees the band celebrates its 35th anniversary, still as busy as ever with a brand new album and a series of tours.

Eddie and the Hot Rods began life in 1976, when four teenagers from Southend got together and, playing their own style of fast energetic rock and roll/r’n’b, were soon a big hit on the London pub rock scene.

Catching the eyes and ears of the music press and the major record companies, they were soon signed up by the legendary Island Records and went on to have three hit albums and four top 40 UK singles including the Top Ten hit Do Anything You Wanna Do. There have been numerous TV appearances worldwide and they have filled almost every major venue in the UK. A success in the USA too, they have toured alongside The Ramones, Tom Petty, The Police, Squeeze and Talking Heads and are still in demand to this day.

The other favourite popping will be singer and actress Hazel O’Connor, who now forms one third of the Bluja Project and can be seen at The Flowerpot on Thursday, March 31.

Hazel O’Connor rose to fame as the star of the 1980 movie Breaking Glass and her subsequent singles Will You, Eighth Day and Breaking Grass were all big hits.

Here, she teams up at the King Street venue with Sarah Fisher and Clare Hirst as The Bluja Project. Together, they have toured in England and performed in France and Ireland, releasing one album so far with album two already in the making. The ladies have also contributed to Re-Joyce – the single in aid of Myton Hospices and Help The Hospices, available on download.

Hazel O’Connor contributes vocals to The Bluja Project with Clare Hirst on saxophone and Sarah Fisher on keyboards and vocals. This gig forms part of the Blondes On Fire tour.

In between these two visits, there will be a gig at The Flowerpot on Saturday, March 26 by The Floyd Effect with their well-honed tribute to a large and impressive musical back catalogue of Pink Floyd.

Doors open at 8pm for all three gigs. Admission is £10 for Eddie And The Hot Rods, £10 for The Floyd Effect and £12 for Hazel O’Connor And The Bluja Project.
