Music fans are in for a real treat when Oysterband perform a concert at The Grand Pavilion, Matlock Bath, on Friday, September 26.
Oysterband make a kind of modern, folk-based British music, and describe themselves as ‘acoustic at heart but not always quiet’.
For close to four decades now, Oysterband have wowing audiences and music lovers from far and wide with their top recordings and enthralling live performances.
At first purely a dance band (The Oyster Ceilidh Band), they soon started experimenting with radical arrangements of traditional songs and with home recording, and even put out four lo-fi albums in the early 80s.
The name shortened to The Oyster Band, they went from strength to strength, put out more albums, shortened the name again to Oysterband and are still going strong, having picked up plenty of awards and fans along the way.
In 2003 they were honoured to receive the Good Tradition award at the BBC Folk Awards, and in 2005 (as Oysterband’s Big Session) were named Best Group.
In recent years, they have consciously tried to evolve their songwriting beyond the clichés of the ‘Celtic’ style, and have also re-explored the pleasures of completely acoustic playing.
The Grand Pavilion is a registered charity which bought the building from Derbyshire Dales District Council in August 2013 and runs music, theatre, markets and private events to raise funds for repairing, maintaining, preserving and restoring the building. The long-term aim when fully restored is to be the largest theatre, live music venue and community space in Derbyshire Dales. At the moment it remains, ‘a Little Bit Scruffy’ but weatherproof, open for business and professionally run. There is more information at www.thegrandpavilion.co.uk
Tickets for the gig cost £18 in advance and £20 on the door and are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, We Got Tickets, See Tickets and in person at The Mining Museum in Matlock Bath, Matlock Music Shop and Cromford Post Office. The gig is all-standing and doors open at 7.30pm. The Grand Pavilion’s bars will be open, featuring guest real ale and cider.
